Ways to Enjoy the Fall Season
The fall typically brings comfortable temperatures, enjoyable scenery, and many fun opportunities! Discover ways to enjoy the autumn season this year.
With summer rapidly upon us and soon to be in the rearview window, it’s time to turn our attention to autumn. The fall season is a refreshing time of year with cooler yet pleasant temperatures, along with vibrant colors bursting all around.
The weeks following Labor Day are a great time to get outdoors and relish your surroundings, especially before the hustle and bustle of the winter holidays ushers in. While the weather is still great, here are a few ideas of ways you can enjoy this fall season.
Go Leaf Peeping
As fall ushers in, the temperatures become pleasant, possibly even chilly. Like the rest of us, the trees begin to prepare for winter with their dazzling displays of yellow, orange, and red shades.
Whether you like to go on walks, hikes, take photos, or simply enjoy gazing upon changing leaves, you don’t want to let this time pass you by. Enjoy it while it lasts!
You might find great leaf-peeping opportunities in your neighborhood, or you might want to visit nearby parks, mountains, or other locations where brilliant fall colors show themselves off.
Enjoy Outdoor Exercise Opportunities
Cooler temperatures can be the perfect time to get outside and move. Even if you don’t feel like leaf-peeping or there are no good opportunities nearby, plan to take morning, afternoon, or evening walks. The cool air can be invigorating and any extra exercise you can squeeze in is good for you. Create a great playlist and bring the earbuds. Even better, see if a friend or two would like to join you.
Try Apple or Pumpkin Picking
Fall means it's time for apples and pumpkins. It’s a great time to head out to a farm where they offer the public the ability to pick their own apples or pumpkins. A fun activity for all ages, you can bring home your bounty to package as gifts, bake fresh pies or breads, jar fruit butters, or make other goodies. Use pumpkins to decorate your front porch or make seasonal carvings to put out for Halloween.
Plan for Quality Kitchen Time
This can go hand-in-hand with apple and/or pumpkin picking, but quality time in the kitchen can also involve other great meals and goodies to be made.
- Roast seasonal veggies
- Bake pies
- Create delicious soups
- Make cider donuts
Seasonal dishes being crafted in your kitchen also make your home feel cozy and smell great. Feel like being social? Plan a fall social where everyone brings a potluck dish.
Visit Farmers’ Markets/Fall Harvests
Farmers’ markets and/or fall harvests are nice autumn outings. Purchase seasonal foods, such as potatoes, apples, corn, beets, squash, and pumpkins, along with other handcrafts or goodies. Take a hayride or find your way out of a corn maze. Many farms also plan fun games, such as corn hole, or pie-eating contests.
Host a Gathering
When autumn arrives, it’s common for people to wind up their summer trips and spend some time at home before the winter holidays arrive. September, October, and November are terrific times to plan a gathering. You can have a seasonal party, such as Halloween or Thanksgiving, or plan a football party to root for your favorite teams.
Other gatherings you can plan are outdoor dinners under twinkling lights, roasting marshmallows under the moonlight, or hosting a cocktail and dessert night on your deck.
Plant Fall Flowers
While the dazzling spring and summer colors come to an end, you can spruce up your outdoor spaces with fall flowers. Plan for mums, pansies, asters, goldenrods, fall daisies, and sunflowers, to name a few. You can plan to revive your dormant gardens or add some nice potted seasonal plants to your porch and other outdoor areas.
Make a Scarecrow
Rake up those dazzling colors off your lawn and stuff old clothing to make a scarecrow. It’s a fun way to clean up your yard while you prepare unique fall decorations for your home.
