Great Fall Travel Destinations
Fall is a great time to travel in the U.S. with many destinations offering lower crowds and better prices. Learn the top places to visit this autumn.
As balmy summer days transition into pleasant and crisper temperatures, it’s a great time to travel. The peak summer season has passed, prices tend to drop, and crowds dissipate.
Thinking about doing some fall travel? Check out the following great destinations to consider for your trip.
Boston, Massachusetts
Boston offers charm, energy, culture, and history, to name a few attributes. You’ll find plenty to do here in the fall once the heat of summer is in the rearview mirror. Take a stroll in one of the city’s iconic parks, view fall foliage, and visit museums and historical landmarks. Venture into Boston’s suburbs. End a day on the Cambridge side of the Charles River to catch a magnificent sunset.
Shenandoah Valley, Virginia
A trip to Virginia’s stunning Shenandoah Valley makes for a terrific fall trip. See spectacular fall foliage on Skyline Drive. A drive on this 105-mile roadway takes about three hours. Experience different types of foliage and/or walk on some trails or take hikes along the way.
Spend time visiting one of Shenandoah’s quaint towns or cities, such as Staunton, Luray, Harrisonburg, or Front Royal, to name a few. Many communities offer fall festivals and other exciting events to take part in. You’ll also find several caverns spanning the Shenandoah area to explore.
Mackinac Island, Michigan
Mackinac Island is famous for its summer fun and vibes, but don’t discount this destination for fall travel. Enjoy the beautiful scenery and fall foliage, take bike rides, go horseback riding, experience a horse-drawn carriage ride, or simply relax at a spa. It’ll be quieter in the autumn, but never a dull moment. With the summer crowds gone, you can typically get better prices too.
Cape May, New Jersey
Cape May is not the stereotypical Jersey shore town, being a National Historic District. Known for its Victorian-era vibe, you can stroll the city streets and see beautiful architecture. Take a morning walk on the beach for a lovely sunrise. Indulge in local seafood, tour historic buildings, visit a winery, or go shopping. If you visit toward the end of October or early November, you can participate in Sherlock Holmes Weekend.
Jackson Hole, Wyoming
Jackson Hole tends to quiet down after a busy summer, but many of the same outdoor activities are still happening in full swing (minus the crowds). Enjoy proximity to national parks and other areas. Take a scenic hike, see fall foliage, attend a fall festival, take a bike ride, do a wildlife tour, indulge in great dining, visit a museum, or go fly-fishing. Temperatures range in the 70s during the day but can drop into the 30s at night, so be sure to pack your layers.
