4 Tips for Clean Eating

You’ve probably heard “eating clean” mentioned pretty often recently. It’s become a common buzzword, but what does it mean? And how do you eat clean?

Clean eating is all about eating a diet that’s made up of unprocessed, whole, healthy foods. While the term “eating clean” might be new, this healthy way of eating isn’t. It’s more than a diet – it’s a lifestyle change that maximizes health and boosts energy.

How do you get started? Here are a few essential tips to get you going.

Tip #1 – Skip the Processed Foods

The goal of clean eating is to eliminate processed foods, or at least minimize how much processed food you’re consuming. Anything that comes in a package, can, box, or bag generally has been processed, with just a few exceptions (such as fresh produce that comes in a package or bag).

Tip #2 – Eat More Fruits and Veggies

One of the easiest ways to start eating clean is to add more fruits and veggies to your meals. They’re packed with essential vitamins and minerals that come with plenty of health benefits. Some easy ways to get more fruits and veggies in your day include:

  • Making salads colorful, packing them with multiple veggies aside from your greens.
  • Adding orange slices, chopped apples, or berries to favorite dishes.
  • Chopping veggies and fruits and making snack packs to keep in the fridge for easy access.

Tip #3 – Reduce the Refined Carbs in Your Diet

Refined carbs happen to be highly processed, and it’s easy to overeat these foods, too. Instead of eating refined carbs, such as refined white bread, go with whole grain products. If you’re going to have grains in your diet, go with the least processed options, such as steel-cut oats or sprouted grain brain.

Tip #4 – Avoid the Added Sugar

Avoiding added sugar is one of the key principles in eating clean. Unfortunately, sugar is found in all kinds of foods, even if they don’t seem sweet. Condiments and sauces often contain more sugar than you’d expect. Small amounts of natural sugar, such as maple syrup or honey, are preferable if you’re eating clean.
