The Right Fats and Oils for Brain Health

The brain and nervous system are comprised of 60 percent fat, so having a diet full of the right kinds of fats and oils is an essential part of maintaining your brain health. These fats and oils include omega-3, monounsaturated fats, and olive oil.

The Benefits of Healthy Fats & Oils

1. Omega-3 for your brain. Scientists believe that Omega-3 fatty acids of some fish are essential for a healthy mind. Fish; such as salmon, tuna, and halibut, some plants, and nut oils are all known to contain Omega-3 fatty acids.

Research suggests loading up on fish like salmon twice a week. A good diet to follow is the Mediterranean diet, which emphasizes foods that are rich in Omega-3s, whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, fish, olive oil, and garlic.
 

2. Avocados are a healthy fat. Not all fats are bad, in fact, avocados contain a healthy fat called monounsaturated fat. Monounsaturated fats, also found in nuts and vegetable oils, benefit brain function and promote healthy blood flow. A healthy flow of blood to the brain means a highly functioning brain.
