If you ever have the bad luck to be in a bad accident somewhere in Arizona, you better hope that the whirring sound you hear is a helicopter landing near you, and if you are really lucky, a first responder flight nurse named Sally jumps out and comes to your aid.

Sally works for a stand-alone helicopter company in Arizona.  “We cover the whole state from 11 helicopter bases all around the state,” she says.  “We sometimes have to dig people out of horrible places when we get there on the helicopter. So we're always there on your worst day, but it always feels good to get them out and take them where they can get really good care.  To be the deliverer and a lot of times, saving their lives.”

She adds, “I've always lived under the premise of you gotta leave people better than you met them. I mean, you gotta leave any area that you walk into better than when you arrived. I think if somebody's down, you got to lift them up. I always feel like you got to make life better wherever you might be.” 

She explains that commitment isn’t limited to Arizona.  “I’ve been interested in overseas work since the beginning of my nursing career in 1984,” she explains.  “I went to Ecuador on a medical mission right after graduating and was hooked.  Since that time, I have started medical missions in Mexico.  I’ve done 50-plus surgical missions overseas in every country including the Middle East, Asia, Latin America, and Africa. 

“I have been involved with South Africa since 2007, working with vulnerable kids. We just built a large kitchen and tennis courts at the school that we work out of in South Africa to feed the kids during the week and weekends.”

Sally realized that she needed to learn more about how to work with traumatized youth.   So, she went back to school and earned a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner degree.

“I started taking Prevagen when I started back to school. I had noticed my memory wasn’t sharp,” she says. “I hadn't been to college for years and I needed all the brainpower I could get so that's why I started taking it.”
