Tips for Making It Easier to Accept Change in Your Life
Accepting changes is challenging to everyone. Learning how to accept and even embrace change is essential for personal growth and improving resiliency.

The idea that change is inevitable and that avoiding change is futile occurred to Greek philosophers as early as 500 BCE. In fact, philosophers like Heraclitus and Zeno developed a specific type of philosophy called Stoicism to help their fellow Greeks cope with the stress of change. Instead of resisting change, Stoicism promotes the rational acceptance of change by determining what we can control and what we cannot control in our lives. In other words, trying to control the uncontrollable will always result in undesirable change.
How you accept and deal with change depends on your perception of change. The Greek Stoics viewed all change as a neutral happening that does not have an emotion or feeling attached to it. When something changes in your life that immediately upsets you, take a deep breath, relax your muscles, and imagine yourself as a stranger encountering this change. Would a stranger see this change as devastating as you see it?
Reaction to Change is Universal
Nearly everybody reacts to unwanted change with shock, disbelief, anger, and fear. However, responding in ways that could impair your mental and physical health is not realistic or rational.
Transforming your response to change won't happen overnight. Begin practicing the following tips to help make it easier to accept unexpected or unwanted change:
Approach change as a challenge for you to enhance the quality of your life. If your doctor informs you that your latest blood tests show you have diabetes, take a positive approach by researching what you can and cannot eat, finding out if there are diabetic support groups in your community, and joining an exercise program at your local gym.
Be mindful of the change. Sit in a quiet place and actually think about the negative and positive aspects of the change. Focus on the positive aspects and realize that you have the ability to turn those positive aspects into lifelong benefits.
Accept the fact that your life will continue to change no matter what you say or do. View change as a type of metamorphosis that a caterpillar goes through to become a butterfly. If caterpillars had a choice, do you think they would choose to remain a caterpillar or grow into a beautiful butterfly that can fly above everyone else?
